SANTA FE – Senate Republicans have issued a letter to Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham requesting a pause on the implementation of a new rule adopted by the Construction Industries Division (CID). The rule mandates that new dwellings after July 31, 2024, shall include an electric vehicle charging station. The letter, signed by all 15 members of the Senate Republican Caucus, notes that this rule resembles a measure rejected by the legislature. The letter is attached here.
“The Governor is not serious about solving New Mexico’s housing crisis,” said Senator Gregg Schmedes (R-Tijeras). “Radical progressive policies like this only burden prospective home buyers with added costs for infrastructure they don’t need. We have a homelessness issue, a housing shortage, diminishing wages, sky-high interest rates, and rabid inflation. Making it even more difficult to afford and purchase a home is not what New Mexicans are asking for right now.”
“It is unfortunate to again see this administration putting progressive priorities above the needs of the people,” added Senate Republican Leader, Senator Greg Baca (R-Belen). “New Mexico has a growing list of challenges and issues, and it’s insulting that our government is focusing so much time and attention on something most New Mexicans do not want. Let’s get back to policies that matter: solving our crime crisis, our open border, and the out-of-control cost of living.”
